David Cripps - Race Engineer, No. 4
David Cripps, a 45-year old mechanical engineer from Oxford, England, will make his return to Panther Racing this season after a two-year hiatus. Growing up near the Silverstone Circuit helped Cripps get interested in all kinds of motorsports; from motocross to road racing, which led him into the engineering side of the business. After working in Formula One as a Junior Engineer for Williams F-1, Cripps was offered a position at Benneton F-1 before making the move to IndyCars.
A summer stay in the United States in 1990 is where Cripps began his IndyCar career and paved his path to success. In his career, Cripps has finished second, third and fifth in the Indy 500 with Christian Fittipaldi, Jimmy Vasser and Richie Hearn, respectively. Cripps also engineered three Indianapolis 500 “Rookie of the Year” winners – Fittipaldi, Lyn St. James and Tora Takagi. Cripps worked with respected IndyCar teams Dick Simon Racing, Walker Racing, and Mo Nunn before moving to Panther in 2004, where in two seasons he helped engineer Tomas Scheckter to three pole awards and a race victory at Texas Motor Speedway. After a two-year stint with Vision Racing, Cripps returned to the team in 2008 to solidify Panther’s engineering unit.
